Laughter. Through my sense of humor and my curiosity for the unknown, I recovered. I have always had a quick sense of humor; however sometimes bizarre. Tapping into my humor and learning to laugh at myself, and my situation, helped me get through the years of recovery. I remember writing a beautiful card to my son who just graduated from college a year after my strokes. I remember really thinking about the message I wanted to share with him with my words. During his graduation party, in front of everyone, he opened my card, looked up, and stared at me. I had written a card full of nonsense words and he couldn’t read it! He came and whispered in my ear, “Mom, I’m sure the message you meant to write was beautiful but….” We looked at each other and started to laugh. What else was there to do? I knew I wasn’t myself, but I also knew I would get better.
Creative enlightenment. With all the time I had on my hands I started making things. My mother was an artist and I always hand my hands in art as a hobby. For some reason I was successful at this and I felt hopeful again. I moved to Palm Desert to be near my ailing mother and was given a job working a couple days a week in an art gallery. Being around the art seemed to help light my fire in becoming a full time artist. After turning my garage into an art studio, and even teaching art a couple days a week, I had the courage to start my own company called Whimsical Curiosities.
I now have a new passion. I wake up every morning excited to create something new. I can walk, use my hands and write again. The person within me has become a better person and lives in a “smell the roses’ place in life. I am now an assemblage artist who uses vintage findings and recycled items to create sculptures, wall hangings, and jewelry with the intention to capture your curiosity, make you smile and make you feel as though you are experiencing something you have never seen before.
